Nancy Marroquin, daughter of Local 1588 member Miguel Marroquin (Global) was awarded one of eight Teddy Gleason Scholarships distributed annually to children of ILA members. Ms. Marroquin graduated from High Tech High School in North Bergen and will be a premed biology major at Fordham University in the fall. In addition to being an excellent student, Ms. Marroquin is a two-time state champion in Judo and a certified E.M.T. Her goal is to attend medical school and specialize in pediatrics.

Teddy Gleason Scholarships pay $6,000 of a recipient's tuition for each of four years. They are awarded to the children of Deep Sea members who've made their hours for three or more years. Active employees are also eligible. Miguel Marroquin has been a 1588 member for 11 years, first at NEAT and then Global Terminals.
Chris Rosensteel was elected Shop Steward of the Ceres list on July 31, 2008 in a five-person race. He will take over the position from interim Steward Danielle Spanovich on Monday, August 11....

Longshoremen, Checkers and Maintenance members quickly pulled together in the aftermath of the tragic accident on 3/17/08. Members teamed up to comfort brother Nelson Bonilla who was struck by a top loader, while other members went to comfort brother Gene.
A special thank you to Mike Mormilie, Marie Lezmia, Rob Dickey, and Tasha Santos who stayed with Nelson until the medics arrived and to Tom Lavin, Neal Pacilio and Lou Marrela for staying with Gene through the ordeal. Thank you to mechanic, Danny Rion, who used his EMT training to help apply a tourniqueut and to checker Mike Fulbrook for getting help over the radio.
Assistant Shop Steward Paul Travato told management that many members were shaken up by the accident and informed management that we would break operation and return in the morning. The new Global management agreed and helped assure that members were safe.
President Anthony Falciccihio and Steward Travato went to the hospital to be with both Nelson and Gene. Lezima, Aaron Brandstien, and Dickey also stayed with Nelson in the hospital to the early hours of the morning.
